Zongo Brigade, Onipa, All Star Revolution, Riddimtion Sound, several bands but one common thread: K.O.G. Kweku Of Ghana. If he varies the contours of his music, the real Kweku reveals little. Or not at all. Comfortable behind his multiple identities that protect him, the man who rarely talks about himself has, this time, decided to lower the energy gauge in favor of real sincerity, even if it means appearing more fragile.
Zone 6, Agege. Suburbs of Accra. The neighborhood of his childhood. Instantly, this is where his past takes him when he closes his eyes. In each of the musical styles he has explored and set on fire, Kweku has made Africa circulate. Rock, jazz, funk, hip hop, soul, all have become African under his onslaught. Today, he's bringing them all back to Africa. Here, he brings them together with the traditional music to which he has reconnected. Rowing under highlife guitars and their electronic programming, he returns to nature, to the church of his childhood for a soul-gospel performance alongside Anthony Joseph. The electricity that used to power his body now powers only the keyboards, bass and six strings. The brass caresses the jerks and percussion that Kweku sometimes contented himself with, the time of a call & response with a chorus of voices. He now converses with elders and departed souls in a thick reggae-dub fog. He meditates, imbibes spirituality, lifts his spirit and takes it far and wide.
