Nèg' Marrons
Jacky and Ben-J, childhood friends originally from Cape Verde and the Congo, have been active for over 25 years and grew up in Garges-les-Gonesse, a suburb of Paris.
In the early 1990s, they tried their hand at music, inspired by their elders Ministère A.M.E.R, Deenastyle on Radio Nova, and Rapline on M6. Their lyrics are politically charged, much like the American hip-hop scene with the group Public Enemy, not to mention that the apartheid policy in South Africa did not leave them indifferent. Their stage name embodies this spirit of rebellion. “The Neg’marron was the rebellious slave, a resistance fighter, defiant in the face of the oppressor; he risked his life to regain his freedom and never lost sight of his goals.”
Highly influential since the late 1990s and creators of numerous classics, Les Nèg’ Marrons embody festive and inspiring music. Discovered through the single “La Monnaie,” they signed with Sony Music and achieved immediate success with their debut album “Rue Case Nègre,” which went gold upon its release.
Subsequently, the two friends embarked on numerous projects: production with the “Première Classe” label, radio with the show “Couvre feu” on Skyrock, and the multi-gold-certified collective “Bisso na Bisso.” From reggae to hip hop, featuring some of the most famous artists (Wyclef Jean, Cesaria Evora, Tonton David, Amadou and Mariam, Alpha Blondy...), the best of their repertoire boasts numerous gold and platinum certifications.
They’re back this year with a new project, announced with the release of “Un peu de temps” last March.
