WORKSHOP IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CIEL

Studio recording - Do it yourself

The advent of home-studios and the democratization of audio equipment means that today's artists can record their music completely independently. There are many reasons for this: budget constraints, the desire to retain control over the creative process of recording, or simply the curiosity to learn how to work with sound. However, it's not always a smooth ride: the degree of upstream preparation, the constraints and choice of equipment to be used, and the acoustics of the recording space are all factors that can lead to poor-quality recordings, making mixing a laborious task.

The aim of this workshop is simply to provide a basic theoretical understanding of the issues involved in audio recording, as well as information on good studio recording practices and how these translate into the real world.

The program includes practical exercises:

  • What type(s) of microphone(s) are best for what you want to record?
  • How can I produce good sound recordings in locations with non-optimal acoustics (bedrooms, rehearsal rooms, etc.)?
  • How can I maintain phase coherence in installations with several microphones?
  • How can I best prepare for an autonomous recording (equipment, planning, pre-mastering, live or track by track)?
  • Once you've recorded, when and how can you work with professionals (especially for mixing and mastering) to finalize your creations?

Speaker

James Leonard is a British sound artist and engineer based in Grenoble. His career has been a perpetual cross-fertilization between music production and new technologies for creation: a doctorate in physical simulation followed by several years of research at Grenoble-Alpes University, while at the same time developing a studio activity, now run under the name Pentachrome Wave. A fervent advocate of experimental music (and the role the computer can play in it), for over 10 years he has been developing all manner of bizarre tools for sound creation, notably within the Orcæ project. He teaches computer music and sound engineering at the Grenoble Conservatoire, and is also resident at Le Ciel with the Eptagon collective.
