JeanJass

Between Belgium, Morocco, and music, JeanJass has forged his path on the move. Rap came naturally to him from a very early age, almost as a matter of course. With Les Champs de Sacs Plastique, the rapper-producer weaves together fragments where memories, family, and roots intersect. A cohesive and authentic album, driven by masterful lyrics and a clear vision: that of a “regular guy” who knows why he raps.

The album was born out of this context, with “Le pays de mon père” as its centerpiece—a song he had long kept at arm’s length. “It’s the kind of song I’d wanted to write for a long time. I needed to explore that, through the eyes of a child, caught between a Belgian mother and a Moroccan father. ”

He then latches onto a theme: the village, summer. The images flow seamlessly: men holding hands, portraits of the king, the taste of sfnej (a type of fritter), the smell of bread, soccer games with the uncles.

Dad, what are those little clouds floating in the fields? He told me: “Those, my son, are plastic bags.” — Le pays de mon père

The title comes from that precise moment, from a child’s perspective, as we disembarked from the ferry. Simple, almost mundane, yet everything about it already speaks to the connection to the land, to heritage. Called mikat, “plastic bags” in the plural in Darija, these fields stretch as far as the eye can see, in white and blue swaths.

Little by little, the story takes shape. An “IMAX” projection in JeanJass’s mind, right from the first track. A film buff, he weaves in references—from It Happened Near Your Home to Eddy Mitchell’s La Dernière Séance — which accompany more personal tracks. “I’m trying to open up some drawers. I feel like I’ve unlocked something.”
